Arthur G Fernandes
MPH, PhD
Brazilian ophthalmology and population health researcher dedicated to advancing our understanding of visual health, disease prevention, and health disparities. My work integrates clinical sciences, epidemiology, and translational research to explore how biological, environmental, and social factors influence vision and eye disease across the lifespan. Embracing a dynamic work lifestyle, I engage in various projects across different areas, which involves laboratory work, field trips for data collection, and chill moments for writing or data analysis in cozy coffee shops.
Over the past decade, I have authored more than 70 peer-reviewed publications (list here) spanning diverse areas of ophthalmology, including ocular oncology, pediatric ophthalmology, glaucoma, and visual function assessment. My current research focuses on population-based and clinical studies aimed at improving strategies for early detection, diagnosis, and management of eye diseases. I also bring experience with animal models and non-human primate vision research, which adds a valuable translational dimension to my clinical work.
I conduct research across the United States and Canada, maintaining strong collaborations in Brazil and Puerto Rico, and partnering with colleagues around the world on projects in Malaysia, Costa Rica, and beyond. Alongside my research, I am passionate about mentoring undergraduate and graduate students in vision science and epidemiology, fostering interdisciplinary approaches to solving global eye health challenges.
Outside of research, I enjoy exploring new cultures, attending live concerts, traveling to the mountains, hiking with friends, baking desserts with my partner, and discovering great coffee shops wherever I go.
