Arthur G Fernandes

MPH, PhD

Brazilian scientist passionate about travelling, immersing myself in different cultures, and continuously expanding my knowledge. Embracing a dynamic work lifestyle, I engage in various projects across different areas, which involves laboratory work, field trips for data collection, and chill moments for writing or data analysis in cozy coffee shops.

My research interests cover a broad spectrum of visual sciences projects including public health aspects of visual impairment and blindness, natural history of disease in human ocular pathology, and the evaluation of animal models for disease and health. After working 13 years dealing directly with human patients on a daily basis, I am currently working with non-human primates visual assessment and developing my skills in molecular biology. My prior research (63 peer-reviewed journal articles) has explored diverse areas of ophthalmology such as ocular oncology, pediatric ophthalmology, glaucoma, and electrophysiology. Currently, I divide my time between Canada (main lab) and Puerto Rico (field side), while also maintaining collaborations with ongoing projects in Brazil and mentoring both undergraduate and graduate students.

During my leisure time, you'll often find me attending live concerts, embarking on exciting hikes, baking nice desserts for my friends, enjoying the vibrant nightlife of big cities, and cherishing moments with my family.
